UNDERSTANDING THE AGREEMENT
The agreement links the European Union with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Its trade pillar aims to reduce barriers and make trade rules more predictable. The interim trade agreement has applied provisionally since 1 May 2026.
For businesses, it can improve access to customers and suppliers. The opportunity must be assessed by product and destination: tariff schedules, origin requirements and other entry rules still apply.

Lower duties on eligible goods can improve landed costs and pricing. Reductions may be immediate or phased in, depending on the product.
Access to covered public tenders can open another sales channel. Eligibility depends on the entity, contract scope, thresholds and exclusions.
Commitments on customs and technical barriers support planning. Product standards, sanitary rules and import requirements still need to be met.
Benefits are not automatic: tariff classification, preferential origin, phase-in schedules, quotas and safeguards must be checked for each operation.
